Gene Larew News - 2010
Hoo’s on first, again
The Gene Larew® HooDaddy has found its way back into the top spot in tackleboxes across the country, mostly because scores of anglers are rediscovering the bait as one of the best at enticing big bass to strike.
E-mails, photos and notes about significant catches have been rolling into the company, many sharing news of double-digit largemouths caught on the baits. And the reports aren’t just coming from Texas’ Lake Fork, Falcon Lake, Amistad and Choke Canyon, where the Larew creature bait has always been a proven favorite. HooDaddy fish tales are also being heard with frequency from Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mexico and several other places that take their bass fishing seriously.
But whether a longtime fan or a newcomer to the HooDaddy series, all anglers stand to benefit from the recent addition of six new colors to both the 6” HooDaddy and the 4.5” HooDaddy Jr.
Joining the lineup are two-color laminates being manufactured at Larew’s headquarters in Tulsa, Okla. New are blackberry/sapphire, green pumpkin/Christmas tree, green pumpkin candy, dark watermelon candy, smoke neon/pumpkin pepper neon and dark watermelon neon/watermelon neon. The “neon” designation means the color includes red metalflake.
“Coming up with new colors is always difficult, but these are hot fish catchers,” said Larew’s George Toalson. “Some are variations of already proven colors, while the others are new blends to keep up with developing color trends in certain markets. We’re fortunate to be located right in the middle of bass country where we can keep a finger on the pulse of what anglers are wanting.”
Fitting perfectly into the creature bait category, HooDaddy series lures feature concentric rings throughout their body lengths. The rings not only give the baits action and “noise” when making friction contact with underwater obstacles, they also boost the fish-hooking percentage.
“With the HooDaddy series, the worm hook is rigged by bringing the point all the way through the bait’s body and then retaining it in the rings, The positioning keeps it weedless but puts it in a much location with little plastic to penetrate when it’s time to set the hook. There’s no question your hookups are greater as a result,” Toalson explained.
The HooDaddy jumped into popularity right out of the mold when first introduced. That’s when Oklahoma’s Darrell Robertson used the bait to win a million dollar FLW tournament. Company officials say there’s no way to know just how much money the baits have won over the years, but say they get new notices of successes almost every day.
In addition to the HooDaddy and HooDaddy Jr., there’s also a 3” Baby HooDaddy. The two smaller sizes are also available in Larew’s famous floating formulation and scented with Crave. All options considered, HooDaddys come in more than 35 colors.
